Scotsman's NU130 Is Gone, So We Must Move On

Well, as the saying goes, "All good things must end", and unfortunately the day has come that Scotsman has discontinued the production of their NU130. Seeing that we've spoken about the joys of nugget ice in a previous article, I felt compelled to relay the news that although the NU130 from Scotsman is gone, there are still ways for nugget ice lovers to get their favorite ice in the comfort of their own home. The way in which this is done is simple- consider the GEMU090 from Ice-O-Matic.
Even though Scotsman discontinued the production of the NU130, Ice-O-Matic's GEMU090 provides almost identical performance and production. The two also look incredibly similar as well. Besides being desired for the nugget ice it produced, the NU130 was popular because of its elegant finish, and its ability to fit in with any surrounding decor. With the GEMU090, you will hardly be able to tell the difference. The most notable discrepancy between the two is that the GEMU090 measures an inch shorter than the NU130, so it has the ability to fit in a wider variety of locations.

In terms of production, the NU130 held a slight edge over the GEMU090, with the ability to produce up to 125 pounds of ice per day. The GEMU090 does not produce quite as much ice per day, but it still produces up to 85 pounds in a 24 hour period. Their production rates may vary a bit, but the internal bins both hold the same amount of ice- 22 pounds when full. Like Scotsman's NU130, the GEMU090 is also available with a gravity drain or a drain pump.

There are a few minor details that should be noted with regards to these two undercounter ice machines. Ice-O-Matic's GEMU090 is approved for outdoor use just as the NU130 was. Also, although nugget ice is the widely accepted term for the type of ice produced by this machine, Ice-O-Matic refers to it as Pearl Ice. The name may be different, but the ice created is the same flavor-saving, chewable ice that was formerly created by the NU130. Finally, Scotsman Industries is actually the parent company of Ice-O-Matic, so if you have reservations about changing your brand loyalty, be sure to consider this fact.

Even though we can no longer get nugget ice from Scotsman's NU130, all is not lost. Thankfully, Ice-O-Matic's production of the GEMU090 will continue as planned, so nugget ice lovers will be still be able to get their fix. If you are one of those who have their sights set on a new, compact, undercounter nugget ice machine, consider the GEMU090 from Ice-O-Matic as a quality alternative to Scotsman's NU130.
